Finding a Shopify Agency: When it's Worth It – and What it Costs

Shopify is built so that you don't need an agency. That's precisely the selling point: choose a theme, add products, connect payment providers, done. Thousands of shops run this way, and for many, it's the right decision.

And yet, there comes a point where doing it yourself becomes more expensive than hiring someone. This article describes where that point lies, what an agency costs, and how to recognize a good one.

When you don't need an agency

If all of the following points apply to you, save your money:

  • You sell fewer than about 50 products without complicated variants.
  • A purchased theme covers your design, or design isn't important to you.
  • You ship domestically, with one shipping provider, without special rules.
  • You don't need integration with an ERP or accounting system.
  • You have time yourself – about 40 to 80 hours for the initial setup.

A shop of this type will cost you the plan fee, perhaps 200 to 400 euros for a theme, and your time. An agency would do little to improve it.

When an agency pays off

Conversely, there are five situations where doing it yourself regularly becomes more expensive:

Integration with existing systems. ERP, accounting, warehouse, POS system in a physical store. Such interfaces are the most common reason for agency projects – and the area where self-built solutions with five chained apps collapse fastest.

Complex product logic. Configurable products, tiered pricing, customer groups with different prices, minimum order quantities, B2B alongside B2C. Shopify can do this, but not by simply clicking.

Migration of an existing shop. Moving from WooCommerce, Shopware, or Magento with existing customers, order history, and – most importantly – functioning redirects for all old addresses. A migration without clean redirects regularly costs a significant portion of organic traffic.

A shop that makes money. Beyond a certain turnover, the calculation changes. If one percent more conversion rate means 3,000 euros per month, an optimization budget is not an expense, but an investment with a return.

Internationalization. Multiple countries, currencies, tax rates, and languages. Feasible, but full of details that you get wrong once and then carry with you for years.

What Shopify itself costs

Before you talk about agency fees, you should know the ongoing platform costs. The German tariffs, as of summer 2026:

Planper month with annual subscriptionper month with monthly paymentCard fee online (EU card)Surcharge for external payment provider
Starter5 €
Basic25 €36 €2.1 % + 0.30 €2.0 %
Grow66 €105 €1.8 % + 0.30 €1.0 %
Advanced289 €384 €1.6 % + 0.30 €0.6 %
Plusfrom 2,100 €from 2,100 €negotiable0.2 %

Two things about this. First: The difference between annual and monthly payment is considerable – for the Grow plan, it's about 470 euros per year. Second: Cards from outside the EU and American Express cost significantly more, for Amex about 3.2 percent in the Basic plan. If you sell a lot internationally, you should calculate with the higher rates, not the standard values.

Check the current conditions before signing a contract. Shopify regularly adjusts prices and plan names, and the German Euro prices differ from the dollar amounts mentioned on English-language pages.

The item that almost everyone underestimates is not in this table: Apps. An average shop uses between 6 and 15 paid apps, usually 10 to 50 euros per app per month. Reviews, subscription function, advanced search, shipping rules, newsletter, returns portal – this quickly adds up to 150 to 400 euros monthly, permanently.

A good reason for an agency is precisely the ability to avoid apps: what an app does for 39 euros a month is sometimes an adjustment that costs 600 euros once and then nothing more.

What an agency costs

Rough orientation for the German market:

Theme setup with customizations: 3,000 to 10,000 euros. Purchased theme, adapted to your corporate design, products set up, payment and shipping configured, legal pages checked. The right size for most beginners.

Individual shop: 15,000 to 50,000 euros. Own design, own templates, individual functions, usually at least one interface.

Shopify Plus with system integration: from 50,000 euros. Multiple shops, multiple countries, ERP integration, individual checkout processes.

Ongoing support: 500 to 5,000 euros monthly. From "we take care of updates and small changes" to a dedicated team that continuously tests and optimizes.

Hourly rates for specialized e-commerce agencies are usually between 100 and 180 euros.

When to switch to Shopify Plus?

The most common question after the agency question. Just calculate it: The Advanced plan costs 289 euros per month, Plus starts at around 2,100 euros. You have to make up the difference of about 1,800 euros monthly through lower transaction fees or additional features.

Calculated solely on the fee for external payment providers – 0.6 percent for Advanced versus 0.2 percent for Plus – you would need around 450,000 euros in monthly turnover for the switch to pay off from that alone.

So, Plus doesn't pay off through fees, but through features. It's only worth it earlier if you need specific functions: multiple shops under one contract, customizable checkout, higher limits for programming interfaces, B2B functions.

If an agency recommends Plus without doing this calculation, ask why. They earn more from Plus projects.

How to recognize a good Shopify agency

They ask for your numbers before making an offer. Revenue, average shopping cart, conversion rate, most important traffic sources. Without these numbers, any recommendation is guesswork.

They show you live shops. Not screenshots, but addresses you can visit yourself. Test purchase something there and check the checkout process.

They talk about the checkout process, not just the homepage. The homepage is what looks good in references. Revenue is generated between the product page and order confirmation.

They are honest about apps. An agency that suggests an app for every problem might be earning referral commissions. A good agency will explain which apps you really need and which ones you can cancel after launch.

They know German legal obligations. Basic price indications, right of withdrawal with a functional sample withdrawal form, shipping cost information, order button with correct labeling – and since June 28, 2025, the requirements of the Accessibility Strengthening Act, which expressly includes electronic commerce. Exempt from services are only micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees and a maximum annual turnover of 2 million euros; those who sell physical products also fall under this as micro-enterprises.

Shopify is an American product; the standard settings do not fully reflect German law. An agency that doesn't address this issue on its own has not yet experienced a warning letter.

They tell you what you should do yourself. Product texts, images, category structure – anyone who completely outsources this pays a lot for content that no one knows as well as they do.

The practical entry

If you're unsure whether you need an agency, there's a cheap test: Set up the shop yourself, with a purchased theme and your ten most important products. In two weeks, you'll learn more about your own requirements than in five agency meetings – and then you can write a request that is specific enough for comparable offers.
